What is growth, anyway?

For too many companies, growth is like the sacred and fabulous bird of the ancient Egyptians, present also in the Greek mythology and in the Arab culture: the phoenix. The Italian poet Metastasio gently refers to it with a famous verse: “Che vi sia, ciascun lo dice; dove sia, nessun lo sa” (everyone says it exists, no one knows where). How to grow depends on factors and peculiarities that are very specific to internal and external variables. In my experience, there is no magic bullet. Nobody has discovered the Holy Grail of Growth, also because there is no single receipt: what has worked in a context, may cause problems in another.

But what is growth, anyway?

At OPG we have created a methodology to define growth based on six criteria

These six are usually the most relevant elements to understand growth and plan for it in the energy and B2B industrial sectors. But there can also be other elements to consider and analyse:

  • Talent growth: money is certainly fundamental to grow. But it is a resource that can be usually mobilized and found as required. But too many times, growth is envisioned and directed by a very limited number of people in a company, all the other follows. Finding and retaining talents is a key element for a durable, long term growth.
  • Production growth: to generate higher volumes or more automated/robotized production lines or more digitization of production processes.
  • Efficiency growth: less investments/costs to produce the same or even higher volumes, less waste from the production process, better use of scarce resources, etc.
  • Green growth: lower emissions, use of greener technologies, more sustainable processes and productions, etc.
  • Impact on the supply chains and societies: ability to grow the company while generating a positive impact on suppliers, partners, distributors, clients and, more in general, on territories, fiscal value, job creation, etc.

The sapient analysis and mix of all these variables will re-orientate a growth strategy and the organizational changes necessary to achieve it.
